Shingles vaccine
  • We provide shingles vaccine for the elderly, aged 70-79.
  • This means that under the NHS the shingles vaccine is not available to anyone who is aged 80 or over.
  • The vaccine is used to prevent Shingles, which is a skin disease that causes lots of pain.
    • There are two versions (brands) of the vaccine:
      • Zostavax: This is an attenuated (weakened) version of the shingles virus and is given only as a single dose.
      • Shingrix: This is a dead version of the shingles virus and is given as a double dose, the first at any time booked and the second 2 months after the first dose.
    • If you have a weakened immune system, you cannot have the Zostavax vaccine, so therefore you must get the next alternative.
